How Long Do the Results From Dermal Injections Last?

Portrait of young woman with perfect skin clean A regular and rigorous skincare routine is essential for maintaining a youthful and radiant look. Even with the great skin care products available today, you might need an in-office treatment using a dermal injectable to fully achieve your aesthetic goals.

Since your face is what people remember most, signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines, may negatively impact your confidence and self-image. There are many dermal injectable treatments available, each addressing a specific sign of aging or helping to achieve a certain aesthetic goal.

Of all the treatments, BOTOX® is potentially the most recognized name among dermal injectables. BOTOX® and similar treatments differ from other types as they are not fillers or increase volume under the skin.

Instead, BOTOX® works by temporarily blocking the muscles in your face from contracting and causing lines and wrinkles to develop. These treatments usually last about 6 months but, in some cases, can last longer. Some patients respond well enough that they can wait longer between each subsequent treatment as the muscles begin to atrophy and lose strength.

Other dermal injectables are meant to increase volume. Formulations of hyaluronic acid (HA) or collagen, both naturally occurring in your body, are injected into specific areas on your face. These add volume from beneath the skin and help smooth deeper lines and wrinkles.

However, they do not always keep lines and wrinkles from forming in the future. Like BOTOX®, these treatments last at least 6 months. However, many patients continue to see results much longer. They also often become more effective with each treatment as your body increases its production of collagen and HA.

Although slightly more invasive, fat transfer and implants can potentially bring permanent results. For these procedures, your doctor will harvest body fat from unwanted areas and inject it into specific areas of your face. Since this is naturally made from your own body, there are minimal risks or side effects.

What Nonsurgical Treatment is Right for Your Aging Face?

If you’re like the vast majority of adults, you may feel frustrated about the signs of aging that seem to worsen day by day. We all realize that our face will change over time, but that doesn’t mean we are ready to accept these changes when they occur. Fortunately, a number of advances have occurred in anti-aging technology. These advances have made it possible to achieve significant cosmetic improvements without surgery. Knowing that many of our patients are interested in exploring nonsurgical options for facial rejuvenation, we have developed a comprehensive menu from which to choose. We’ll discuss a few of our most popular treatments here.

Injectables

Most people’s first step into professional anti-aging treatments is to get injectable treatment. Because products like BOTOX and dermal fillers are so popular, we assume most people are aware of how they work. Still, if you’re new to treatment, you may have questions. In general, BOTOX and dermal fillers work synergistically. Many people combine them to achieve the best results. BOTOX is a neuromodulator that smooths lines and can lift the brow by relaxing contracted muscles. For the record, we not only offer BOTOX but also other neuromodulators that have been developed in recent years. Dermal fillers work differently than neuromodulators. These products are intended for volume increase. This makes fillers great not only for lines and creases but also for lip and cheek enhancement. There is no downtime and results last from a few months to 2 years.

AccuTite

This minimally-invasive treatment has been achieving impressive results for years. The basis of AccuTite treatment is radiofrequency energy. Unlike older RF treatments, AccuTite works by delivering the thermal energy internally as well as externally. Only a small nick in the skin is needed, so patients are comfortable with the use of a local anesthetic and light sedation. Due to the mechanism of delivery, the results of AccuTite are profound. Due to the small size of the treatment applicator, this procedure is ideal for eyelid rejuvenation, brow lifting, jawline contouring, and even areas of the body like the backs of the arms. There is minimal downtime, and results continue to improve for several months.

SkinTyte

For those interested in a completely noninvasive treatment, SkinTyte delivers. This procedure uses advanced infrared light to deeply heat the skin while cooling and protecting the entire treated area. The energy of the pulses of infrared light are absorbed into deeper layers of the skin, where collagen proliferation is stimulated. There is no downtime after SkinTyte skin tightening treatment. Multiple sessions may be scheduled to achieve the best results.

As the holidays approach, more of us are considering how we can boost our appearance to match our internal liveliness. We’re happy to help you! Contact our Denver office at (303) 839-1616 to schedule your consultation.

We Can Get Your Face Zoom-Ready

In the past year, our approach to life has been drastically altered. A relatively large percentage of the population is now working from home. This has put hundreds of thousands of adults face to face with none other than themselves on a daily basis. If you’ve been on more Zoom or FaceTime calls than you care to admit, you probably know what we’re talking about. No matter how hard you try to focus on others on the call, your eyes inevitably drift to your own reflection, and you may not love what you see.

Video conferencing has made many adults more aware of their aging jawline. The lower face is particularly susceptible to sagging, as is the upper neck. Because we’re often looking down slightly at a laptop or phone, the looseness of the lower face is exaggerated. This can feel frustrating. However, there are several ways to deal with lower face laxity, jowls, double chin fat, and loose neck skin. We’ll discuss them here.

Nonsurgical Treatments for the Neck and Lower Face

  • CoolSculpting. This noninvasive treatment is popular among adults who want to sculpt through fat-reduction. In a brief series of treatments, CoolSculpting destroys a significant amount of fatty tissue, allowing the body to get rid of it naturally. A benefit of this approach is that there is no downtime. It can take a few weeks to begin seeing improvement.
  • AccuTite. A powerful and innovative radiofrequency treatment, AccuTite delivers outstanding results in a single procedure. We perform this treatment with a local anesthetic so patients do not feel any pain. During the procedure, a small probe is inserted beneath the skin. Another probe runs parallel to that but over the skin. This mechanism sends radiofrequency between the two arms for more significant tightening effects with minimal downtime.

Surgical Face and Neck Rejuvenation

  • Neck Lift. This lifting of the neck creates a more youthful look by improving the jawline and removing a “turkey neck”. Downtime is minimal and results can last years.
  • Endoscopic mid-face lift. A mid-face lift is done to reposition the tissue that has descended from the cheeks. Fat pads and muscle are moved upward and secured with sutures. This not only restores more youthful shape to the face but can also reduce sagging along the jawline.

These are just a few examples of how we can correct the sagging that affects the lower face and neck areas. For more information, schedule an appointment at our Denver office by calling (303) 839-1616.

Are you Getting Botox for the First Time? Here’s What to Expect!

Botox cosmetic has been a popular beauty treatment for many years. Each year, we meet people who are ready to try this injectable out for the first time. Since its introduction, Botox has expanded in use from treating frown lines to raising eyebrows in all the right ways. Not only can this injectable raise drooping eyebrows, but it can also smooth forehead lines and crow’s feet. Additionally, Botox can also be used to prevent new wrinkles from forming too soon. No wonder it continues to draw new customers! Here, we walk you through what you can expect at your first Botox appointment.

Consultation

When you schedule an appointment for Botox, you may have a good idea already of what this FDA-approved drug can do. Many people come to their consultation thinking they know what they will need. However, it remains important for us to get to know you. An experienced provider performs a full assessment that includes a discussion about concerns and goals. The assessment also involves a look at the skin and underlying tissue. This initial step is crucial to the best possible outcome because it guides our treatment-planning process.

Treatment

Botox treatment can occur immediately following our consultation. This part of the appointment takes the least amount of time. There is no need for anesthetic. Botox is administered with a very small needle. You can expect a tiny pinching sensation but that’s about it. You don’t feel Botox “working” on the tissue into which it is introduced. After a few injections across the treatment area, your appointment is complete!

Recovery

Some people experience a little swelling and redness after getting Botox. This is a side effect of the injections themselves, not of Botox. Being new to Botox, you may want to schedule your injections at a time when you can go home and rest for the remainder of the day. This way you can see how your body reacts to the injections. Some people experience a slight headache that lasts a few hours, or feel a little tired. However, the most common side effects are swelling and pinpoint redness that lasts only an hour or two. To keep these side effects to a minimum, you should avoid excessive heat, sun exposure, and strenuous exercise for about 24 hours.

Results

Botox injections do not achieve immediate results. The mild neuromodulator gradually relaxes contracted muscles over 5 to 10 days. These effects last 3 to 6 months. The average time between touch-ups is 4 months.

How Should You Rejuvenate Your Aging Face?

You know you want to do something. Those creases between your nose and mouth seem to be getting deeper all the time. Your face looks tired, or it looks gaunt and unhealthy, or it looks sad or angry. These are all common concerns expressed by patients who visit our Denver plastic surgery office and medical spa. We are more than happy to help every one of our patients feel like their best selves. If you are ready, you only have to ask a few questions to determine how you might want to approach your beauty concerns. Here, we discuss the questions that pertain to results between surgical and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation.

Results: How Quickly Do You Want Them?

Once you know you want to do something about the signs of aging, you probably want to get results as quickly as you can. Who doesn’t? This is why dermal fillers and Botox have become the leading non-surgical treatments for facial rejuvenation. One visit to our med spa may take less than an hour, including our consultation time, and the treatment can produce immediate improvements like:

  • Reduction in horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Lifted eyebrows and more open eyes
  • Smoothed undereye bags
  • More contoured cheekbones
  • Fuller lips
  • Correction of creases around the nose and mouth
  • Elimination of mild jowling
  • Double chin reduction

Now, not all of these concerns go away in a single visit. It depends on how each is treated. When a product like Botox is used, results develop over a week. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, immediately plump the skin. The effects of these combined treatments can take up to 10 years off the face. Injections need to be repeated as often as every 3 to 6 months, though, with some products lasting as long as 2 years.

Results: How Long Do You Want Them to Last?

There is no denying the appeal of nonsurgical treatment that gets immediate results. However, those benefits have to be weighed against the longevity that can be achieved as well as the extent of improvement. More significant jowling and tissue laxity may be improved with injectables but not completely erased. A facelift can do that, though. Facelift surgery repositions tissue that has moved downward on the face so it sits over the bony structure of the mid-face once again. This eliminates jowls and drooping skin below the jawline and chin. It restores some of the contouring of the cheeks, as well. Most people who have a facelift do not need a second one to address ongoing age-related changes. What a facelift cannot do, however, is refresh the eyes or forehead. This can be done with an eyelid or forehead lift in combination with the facelift. A facelift can also be combined with injectables for even better results.

We can help you refresh your appearance. Call (303) 839-1616 to schedule your consultation.

Beauty is a Matter of Maintenance

It is common for people of a certain age to begin thinking about beauty. Before the signs of aging become prominent, the goal may be to enhance beauty and postpone the onset of lines and wrinkles. No matter how hard we try, though, it is inevitable that the skin and the shape of the face will change over time. To manage the signs of aging well, it is ideal to address the cause of cosmetic aging. And because aging is an ongoing process, its cause has to be addressed over and over again.

We perform hundreds of services in our Denver plastic surgery and medical spa facility each month. New clients that we meet often want to know what results they can expect from “their treatment.” Translation: “what will this one treatment do for me?” Honestly, one treatment will do very little in the long-run. From the perspective of aging being a continual process, our patients can understand that their beauty is a matter of maintenance.

What Happens Beneath the Skin Doesn’t Stay There

To maintain healthy, attractive skin, many people rely on skincare products. Some are purchased from reputable department stores, some from doctor’s offices, and some are DIY. In every one of these scenarios, we find the singular shortcoming of limited penetration. Remembering that we must address the cause of cosmetic aging, we have to look to the dermis, where most skincare products do not go.

The dermis is the deeper layer of skin where fibroblasts live. Fibroblasts are the cells that produce collagen and elastin. These are the proteins that keep skin looking younger. Collagen does so by supporting firmness. Elastin does so by providing the skin with some stretch and bounce. During the first three decades of life, fibroblasts work wonderfully. They produce enough collagen to keep the skin firm and tight and also extra to heal cuts and scrapes as needed. Around age 30, though, fibroblasts lose their vitality. They all but go to sleep for good. Just because fibroblasts slow or stop their production of collagen and elastin does not mean the skin stops using these proteins. In fact, 1 to 2% of collagen and elastin stores get depleted each year. Without sufficient replenishment, the skin begins to show signs of this degradation.

This isn’t all bad news. Because we know what fibroblasts do and we know that they go dormant, we know we need to wake them up. Topical skincare products don’t do this, but professional treatments can. Examples include Halo laser treatment, Forever Young BBL treatment, and microneedling. With each treatment, fibroblasts are stimulated to stay awake for 4 to 6 months. As treatments are repeated, the new activity in these cells promotes smoother, softer, younger-looking skin.

Aging Gracefully Without Surgery

According to Mark Twain, wrinkles were merely beautiful remnants of joyous smiles. As lovely as this sounds, most of us don’t look at our lines and creases so fondly. Over the past several years, there has been a turn toward natural aging. This means aging without surgical lifts, it doesn’t mean doing nothing to support the skin through multiple transitions. In our Denver medspa, a friendly and experienced staff understands the many contributing factors to facial aging. They also know how to combat them with gentle, effective techniques. Here, we discuss some of the elemental factors needed for graceful aging.

Daily Practice

Daily practice in anything makes perfect in most cases. What is made perfect by a daily skincare regimen is consistency. Of course, we cannot say that if you wash and moisturize and protect every day that you will not age. What we can say, though, is that these acts do go a long way in combating the effects of stress and sunlight. In particular, it is UV exposure that needs to be managed daily. It doesn’t matter how many expensive creams you have, if you’re not putting a buffer between you and the sun, your collagen is getting depleted with every outdoor endeavor. Start with broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and build from there. An experienced esthetician can help you build a skincare routine around your unique needs.

Smooth and Contour

Two of the common concerns that we hear from patients are the formation of permanent lines on the face and the droop of tissue in the lower face. Both of these issues relate to volume loss, an inevitable change that can be easily addressed with injectables. To smooth wrinkles, we commonly use Botox or other neuromodulators or dermal fillers. The product selected relates to the type of wrinkle being treated. Neuromodulators temporarily disable the muscle movements that cause frown lines and other dynamic wrinkles. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, increase volume in the dermis to plump skin depressed into lines or scars. Contouring across the mid-face softens over time, as well, allowing the tissue to droop lower on the face. By restoring contours across the cheeks using dermal fillers, it is often possible to also lift mild jowls and drooping corners of the mouth.

Skincare and injectables are not the only way to support aging skin. There are multiple other nonsurgical techniques that can offset sun damage and other degrading factors, including microneedling and laser skin tightening or resurfacing. Treating the Double-Chin for (Greatly) Improved Confidence

Neck Lift Surgery Denver, CO There are certain aspects of aging that are inevitable. We expect to notice fine lines around the eyes and mouth. We may even nod in acceptance when the jawline starts to soften. But a double-chin? That’s just a slap in the face! The truth is, submental fullness doesn’t only occur in the aging adult. We meet some younger people in our cosmetic surgery practice who feel insecure about the prominence of fatty deposits beneath the chin.

The double-chin is an age-old problem. Fortunately, aesthetic medicine has caught up with it. We now have a few choices in the way we treat this notoriously difficult area.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the manual extraction of fat cells using a small incision and tiny cannula, or tube. Neck liposuction involves microinstruments and refined technique to add better contouring to the upper neck and jawline area.

Neck Lift

The full facelift was once one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed. Years of practice have led to innovations such as localized lifts. Blepharoplasty is one example. The neck lift is another. Neck lift surgery may coincide with neck liposuction for optimal results. Liposuction first removes the extra fat cells that have accumulated in this area; then a lift is performed to secure superficial tissues in a higher, tighter position. This approach may be most appropriate for older patients or those who have lost a substantial amount of weight.

Non-Surgical Double-Chin Treatments

When surgery is not a preferred treatment, it may be possible to consider alternative methods of melting unwanted fat. In our Denver office, we may suggest:

  • An injectable treatment, Kybella is a solution that contains deoxycholic acid. This chemical is naturally-occurring so not likely to cause an adverse reaction (aside from initial swelling and redness due to injections). The absorption of deoxycholic acid disrupts the structure of the walls of fat cells, which leads to targeted elimination. Up to 4 treatments may be needed.
  • Melt fat with freezing temperature? Yes! This non-surgical treatment is usually considered for body contouring but is also effective in the area beneath the chin. A few treatments are needed to completely dissolve a double-chin.

We Have Our Ways

Non-Surgical Facial Options Boulder CO When we think about the desire that we have to look young, or to at least do our part to prevent premature aging (and really, who doesn’t want to slow their aging process?), what gets our attention is the appearance of our skin. Any way you look at it, there is a great deal of value in a good skincare program. This includes using the very best, professional grade cleansers, moisturizers, and serums on a daily basis. It also includes specialty treatments now and then.

We are proud to offer friendly care that is based on years of training and experience in anti-aging procedures such as:

Microneedling

This skin-rejuvenating treatment is beneficial for individuals who have struggled with the scars left behind from severe acne. The micro-channels that are created by the adjustable treatment head do not cause intense side effects, nor do they require downtime for healing (most patients notice slight redness that diminishes over a day). What these channels do, though, is prompt the body to rebuild collagen. Collagen not only heals scars, but this rejuvenating protein also reduces the signs of aging related to laxity, including lines and wrinkles.

BBL

Broad-band light is one of the greatest advances in aesthetic medicine. This photo facial, performed on the face, neck, chest, or hands, reaches beyond the epidermis to heat the upper layers of superficial tissue. Why would we want to do this? Because the gentle heating of cells stimulates collagen production. As collagen strands are strengthened, the uppermost layer of skin, that which you see when you look in the mirror, appears more radiant and youthful. Redness dissipates, texture softens, skin firms. It’s almost like aging backward!

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

There are two laser treatments available in the med spa at our Denver practice for facial and eye cosmetic and oculoplastic surgery: microlaser peel and Pro-Fractional therapy. Each of these innovative laser techniques is performed to gently exfoliate the uppermost layers of skin to reveal healthier, younger-looking cells.

The way that we care for our skin directly relates to how we look as we age. To get personal treatment for great skin, contact us online or call  (303) 839-1616.
