Avoid Bad Surgical Results with These Tips

When you decide to enhance your appearance, you deserve to feel nothing but excitement and confidence. Due to the very nature of plastic surgery, there is some degree of risk involved. What if a complication occurs? What if the outcome of surgery is not what you had wanted? Bad plastic surgery exists. Here, we discuss some powerful ways that you can avoid it.

Choosing Your Plastic Surgeon

If you’re considering having plastic surgery to improve an aspect of your facial appearance, you are in the results game, not the “savings” game. The purpose of plastic surgery is to build on your best features and achieve results that look like you were born with them. The starting point of your journey is your selection of a qualified plastic surgeon. The results of facial plastic surgery are going to be visible to you and everyone else on a daily basis, so your procedure is best done by a board-certified plastic surgeon with precise experience in facial procedures. Dr. Fante is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is board-certified by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has served as president of that organization. He has dedicated his practice to the performance of cosmetic and reconstructive facial procedures and the utmost in patient care.

Questions To Ask Your Surgeon

When consulting with surgeons for plastic surgery, questions provide the opportunity to get to know not only their background but also their thoroughness, standard of care, and personal demeanor. Each of these characteristics is important to the trust and confidence you have in them. If a surgeon does not make you feel comfortable and confident in their ability to provide outstanding care, move on.

  • Where did you complete your residency and in what specialty? This will help you evaluate the level of expertise the surgeon has in your desired procedure.
  • How many times have you performed the procedure I want to get? This gives you more insight into their direct experience performing your selected procedure.
  • What are the risks of this procedure? How often do complications occur? You want a surgeon who can answer this question honestly and confidently.
  • Is this procedure the best option for me? The surgeon will conduct a thorough consultation and examination to determine the answer to this question.
  • Who will administer anesthesia during my surgery? Your surgeon should have a board-certified anesthesiologist with whom they tend to work regularly.
  • What should I expect during recovery? You want your surgeon to provide you with a clear picture of your expected recovery, including what to look out for and when you may need to call the office.
  • What can I do to maximize my outcome? The doctor may have recommendations such as avoiding tobacco and alcohol and eating a nutrient-dense diet before surgery.

How to Manage the Risks of Surgery

Many people would like to have plastic surgery to enhance something about their appearance. However, concerns about surgical risks can stop them in their tracks. We don’t want that to happen to you. Our team prioritizes patient safety, understanding that cosmetic procedures are still surgery and therefore carry risks. We have devoted many hours to developing precise surgical techniques and protocols that can help decrease surgical risks. The work of managing the risks of surgery begins well before anyone steps foot in the operating room. Some of that work is done by you as the patient.

Managing the Risk of Bleeding

Regardless of how exciting it is to imagine the outcome of a successful plastic surgery procedure, such as a facelift or brow lift, no one likes being on the operating table. Our surgical team knows that surgery of any kind can be physically and emotionally stressful regardless of the outcome. That’s why we do everything we can to create a smooth process from consultation to recovery. Being one of the prominent surgical risks, bleeding is something a surgeon begins to manage before making any incisions. Before surgery, patients may be advised to avoid certain supplements and medications. Examples include:

  • Aspirin and NSAIDs like Advil & Tylenol
  • Vitamins E, C, K & B
  • Multi-vitamins
  • Ginseng
  • Herbal supplements
  • Fish oils

Certain foods can affect surgical risks as well as optimal healing. Patients may also be advised to avoid caffeine, sugar, and alcohol.

Safety First

Some prescription medications may contribute to increased surgical risks or poor surgical outcomes. It is important to discuss all medications and supplements with your surgeon during your consultation so there is ample time to stop or switch medications if necessary. The goal of pre-surgical recommendations is to achieve an optimally-healthy state for surgery and the weeks that follow. Our doctors have been in practice for several years and have realized that what happens before surgery can significantly impact recovery. Following the pre- and post-operative instructions provided by your doctor, you know what to expect and what choices will help you reduce the risks of your plastic surgery procedure.

Procedures We Expect to Be Popular in 2021

Plastic surgery and nonsurgical procedures have been popular for many years. The novel coronavirus didn’t change that, as much as we thought it might. Instead of seeing a decline in interest, those offering aesthetic services experienced a marked increase in scheduled appointments once offices reopened after their brief hiatus. While facial plastic surgery is expected to thrive again throughout this year, the trends may look a little different than in years past. Here, we discuss why, and which procedures are on our radar.

There may be a couple of reasons for a change in cosmetic trends in 2021. A pivotal change that occurred in 2020 was the shift to online meetings. Working from home brought millions of people face-to-face with themselves, often for many hours a day. This experienced allowed people to observe what they would like to improve about their facial appearance. Another driving force in the increased interest in aesthetic treatments was the fact that it became easier to “take time off” for recovery from various procedures thanks to more flexible work hours.

If you’ve been thinking about enhancing an aspect of your appearance, you may be interested to know which facial treatments we expect to trend throughout 2021.

BOTOX® Cosmetic/Xeomin/Dysport/Jeuveau

Wrinkle reducers continue to draw patients to doctors’ offices and med spas. These neuromodulators don’t just smooth the dynamic wrinkles that are caused by facial movements, they can also reduce the downward pull on the corners of the mouth and lift the eyebrows. If you’ve noticed concerns like worry lines, crow’s feet or a heavy brow, one of our popular neuromodulators may be ideal for you. Results of Botox and other wrinkle-reducers last three to six months.

Lip Augmentation

Men and women of all ages have expressed an interest in the shape of their lips. We’ve come a long way since the days of the Kylie duck-lip era. Today, lip augmentation is customized to each individual to bring out the ideal amount of fullness that compliments their unique facial structure.

Eyelid Rejuvenation

Blepharoplasty was already a popular procedure, but it’s gotten a boost of interest with the face time adults have been getting for the past year. In addition to being in front of a screen more often, adults are also focusing more on the eyes because that is the area that is most visible these days. Until we are no longer wearing masks when we go out, the eyes are our main representation of mood and personality. Blepharoplasty brings more life back into the eyes so your appearance can accurately depict who you are.

Trending surgical and nonsurgical treatments can be a launch point from which you achieve your beauty goals. To learn more, schedule a consultation at our Denver office at (303) 839-1616.

What Plastic Surgery Has to Offer Women Over 50

Plastic surgery procedures have been common for many years. However, due to the adamant refusal of many high-profile people to admit having had work done, American adults may still be somewhat apprehensive to seek out procedures that could make them happier with their appearance. We may still face certain attitudes about plastic surgery in our country but, fortunately, this is changing. Newer attitudes are paving the way for women (and men!) over a certain age to benefit in several ways.

It’s much more than a cliché to say that when we look good, we feel good. Research proves that. In one study, respondents were surveyed over 23 years. They were asked their opinions on aging, happiness, and wellness. The study discovered that a person’s attitude toward aging correlated directly with the speed and manner in which they aged. Those with a more positive outlook in general tended to suffer fewer and less intense age-related problems. The optimists also lived an average of seven and a half years longer than those with negative attitudes toward aging.

Turning 50 provides us with the opportunity to assess our goals, values, and view of the world. It allows us to observe how we feel at the moment and how we want to feel in the future. Often, plastic surgery fits nicely into an action plan to feel good at every age.

Confidence Can Yield Professional Benefits

Studies indicate that we are working longer today than our parents and grandparents may have. There is no set retirement age. In addition to valuing professionalism, employers also report that they seek confidence when hiring new employees. Confidence is something we feel from others, not something we see in them. Many people agree that feeling good about how they present themselves physically garners increased confidence overall. This can pay off in the workplace, especially one in which ageism can be a notable problem.

According to the statistic that half of employees over the age of 50 reported being laid off before they were ready to leave their job, we can see that there may be little job security for the older demographic. With this in mind, we see that there is immense professional value in attending to one’s appearance in mid-life and beyond.

Your Look is All About You

Of course, we all know that our look is our own, and also only our business. However, perceptions about plastic surgery and how we should feel about getting older can get in the way of making a very personal decision about what is right for us. Several studies point out the emotional benefits of age-correcting procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical. Whatever it is about your appearance that you would like to enhance, we’d like to know. Contact us today to experience the benefits of natural-looking facial rejuvenation.

It’s OK, Think of Yourself This Season

We’re on the brink of a new season, the season of the year that millions of people have been looking forward to for months. As the holidays grow nearer by the day, you may be finding yourself both excited about what is to come and simultaneously concerned about how you will look your best during one of the busiest times of the year. We’ve got you covered and want to offer a few suggestions. If you act now rather than wait until the week of your holiday gatherings, you might accomplish more in terms of beauty than you had imagined you could.

Add the Pop That Makes a Difference

The face and body change in significant ways as we age. The face tends to go first. On the face, the eyes tend to go first. This is because the skin and subcutaneous tissue around the eyes are quite delicate. Here, the bony structure also degrades over time. As if this weren’t notable enough, there is also something about the eyes location on the face that makes them the first thing people tend to notice. Knowing this, you have the chance to add the pop your eyes could use to make your face look youthful and exuberant this holiday season.

Eyelid rejuvenation can be achieved in several ways. For the fastest results, patients may choose injectables. Here:

  • Botox and other neuromodulators can smooth frown lines.
  • Neuromodulators work on the muscles beneath the skin. As such, Botox and other products are also ideal for gently lifting sagging brows.
  • Dermal fillers add volume under the eyes to reduce dark circles and hollows.
  • Dermal fillers can also disguise undereye bags when placed into the transition space between the cheek and the lower eyelid.

Give the Skin an Overall Boost

If you have attended to your skin well and have yet to notice troubling signs of aging like undereye bags and drooping eyebrows, you can boost your beauty this holiday season by scheduling a treatment that will bring out your skin’s radiance.

  • Microneedling is a quick treatment that stimulates circulation and collagen remodeling. Results include an immediate rush of radiance and smoothness.
  • Laser treatments like BBL act on dark spots and roughness, acne, and more.

We’d love to usher you into this holiday season looking and feeling your best. To schedule your treatment in our Denver office, call (303) 839-1616.

Treating the Double-Chin for (Greatly) Improved Confidence

Neck Lift Surgery Denver, CO There are certain aspects of aging that are inevitable. We expect to notice fine lines around the eyes and mouth. We may even nod in acceptance when the jawline starts to soften. But a double-chin? That’s just a slap in the face! The truth is, submental fullness doesn’t only occur in the aging adult. We meet some younger people in our cosmetic surgery practice who feel insecure about the prominence of fatty deposits beneath the chin.

The double-chin is an age-old problem. Fortunately, aesthetic medicine has caught up with it. We now have a few choices in the way we treat this notoriously difficult area.

Liposuction is the manual extraction of fat cells using a small incision and tiny cannula, or tube. Neck liposuction involves microinstruments and refined technique to add better contouring to the upper neck and jawline area.

Neck Lift

The full facelift was once one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed. Years of practice have led to innovations such as localized lifts. Blepharoplasty is one example. The neck lift is another. Neck lift surgery may coincide with neck liposuction for optimal results. Liposuction first removes the extra fat cells that have accumulated in this area; then a lift is performed to secure superficial tissues in a higher, tighter position. This approach may be most appropriate for older patients or those who have lost a substantial amount of weight.

Non-Surgical Double-Chin Treatments

When surgery is not a preferred treatment, it may be possible to consider alternative methods of melting unwanted fat. In our Denver office, we may suggest:

  • An injectable treatment, Kybella is a solution that contains deoxycholic acid. This chemical is naturally-occurring so not likely to cause an adverse reaction (aside from initial swelling and redness due to injections). The absorption of deoxycholic acid disrupts the structure of the walls of fat cells, which leads to targeted elimination. Up to 4 treatments may be needed.
  • Melt fat with freezing temperature? Yes! This non-surgical treatment is usually considered for body contouring but is also effective in the area beneath the chin. A few treatments are needed to completely dissolve a double-chin.

How your Appearance Affects your Career

cosmetic surgery denver co | Dr. Robert Fante In recent years, adults of all ages have begun to notice a trend and not one that we all are immediately willing to accept. More and more people in white-collar professions are turning to cosmetic surgery (and non-surgical treatments) to maintain their best professional image. This isn’t all hype. According to studies, refreshing the face or correcting certain aesthetic imperfections gets the job done – pun intended.

Some of the ways that a boost in appearance correlates to a career boost include:

  1. Getting hired. Your resume only says so much about you and, according to reports, employers are looking for more. It is not uncommon for a potential employer to peruse your social media pics to get a better idea of the kind of person you are. Yes, it feels a bit invasive, but your data is public domain on social media, and it gives your new boss the “warm and fuzzy” they are looking for in bringing you into the fold.
  2. Appearing Confident. According to a 2015 article, “Noninvasive Cosmetic Surgery Can Deliver Confidence, at a Cost,” by Paul Sullivan, it is quite possible that perceived flaws, such as deep creases around the nose and mouth or a double chin, or crooked teeth, can create discontent. If there is something about your appearance that you do not like, it will rob you of complete confidence, and this comes across. Cosmetic dental treatments top the list of procedures but are closely followed by facial rejuvenation like Botox or facelift surgery.
  3. One would think that we could lump “competitive” into the same category as “young,” but that isn’t necessarily the case. Ultimately, what research has found is that attractive features are just plain attractive! It doesn’t matter if you’re no longer 25, what seems to be more quickly noticed is how your face all fits together; how the angles of your jaw complement the contours of your cheeks. Studies show that, regardless of age, “attractive” people with harmonious facial features earn more on average.

You don’t need to look like anyone else, nor do you have to try to go back in time 20 years. A quick refresher with a non-surgical or minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure can bring out your best traits.

Are you a trend-watcher? See how fillers are changing lips across the land

We love watching new trends emerge. Some fade away quickly, while others make a mark that remains for many years. Today, the hot new trend on everyone lips – quite literally, is lip augmentation.

In our Denver plastic surgery and medical spa, one of the requests we are receiving more and more is aimed at the highly visible area of the mouth. The trend began late last year when images of one of the Kardashian Family, Kylie Jenner, plastered just about every magazine stand across the country. The feedback on Jenner’s new lips was mixed, mainly due to the young star’s age (just 17).

There is no denying that her plastic surgeon did wonderful work with temporary fillers. There is also no denying that many women now want a pout just like hers. Before jumping in to the filler pool, it is important to know what to expect from lip fillers, and to ascertain if this treatment is really right for you. If you’re not sure, give us a call to schedule a consultation. We are happy to discuss your concerns, and let you know how they may be corrected.

When Lip Plumping Makes Sense

In Kylie Jenner’s case, lip augmentation really makes sense. Judging by her “before” images, her upper lip was very thin. VERY thin. This is a classic case for dermal fillers. Another reason why lip augmentation may be performed is to fill out lips that have flattened out over time as a result of aging. Outside of these situations, one must be very careful not to overfill lips that are already beautifully full.

Does Lip Augmentation Seem Right for you?

If you are certain that you want to bring out more fullness around your mouth, there are steps you can follow to your best results:

  • Seek care from a highly trained, experienced injector. It is not enough to be familiar with injectables in general. Direct experience performing lip augmentation, and evidence of success via before and after images, is necessary.
  • Talk with your injector about your desired aesthetic, but also be open to what will look best on your face. The goal is to bring out your best, not to look like someone else.

Call ReDerm MD Medical Spa in the office of Dr. Fante at (303) 839-1616 for more information.

Reduce the appearance of age no matter how old you are!

No matter how you look at it, there is no way to stop the hands of time. This means that there really is no way to avoid the effects of aging, and how they affect your appearance. We are fortunate, though, to have innovative science at our fingertips. Today, men and women of all ages have the opportunity to at least slow down their own unique process of cosmetic aging. We are happy to assist our patients in looking and feeling their best. And we are often able to do so without surgery.

Botox has deep roots in clinical medicine. In the mid 20th century, the base substance of Botox Cosmetic was frequently used to help patients with muscular disorders gain comfort from unexpected spasms and tension. It was in clinical use where the cosmetic advantages of this neuromodulator were discovered. Today, Botox is one of the most common anti-aging treatments; popular amongst men and women of all ages.

One of the reasons that the signs of aging become more and more obvious is because the body produces less and less collagen with every passing year. As stores become depleted, the matrix that lies just beneath the skin can no longer support upper layers of tissue as it once did. The result: deflated cheeks, saggy jowls, under eye bags, and the appearance of age. Fillers quickly resolve fine lines and wrinkles by plumping them with a biocompatible material that the body metabolizes over several months time.

Collagen Boosting

Because most of the signs of aging that occur in the skin are related to collagen loss, it would make sense to restore youthful skin with collagen itself. This is a method that was once much more common that it is today. Due to the need for testing prior to treatment, collagen injections have taken a backseat to filler products such as Sculptra. This injectable is more than a filler, it is a substance that prompts the body to generate additional collagen for up to 2 years.

We can help you address your unique concerns. Call today for your consultation.

Are You a Candidate for Upper Eyelid Surgery?

In the past, cosmetic surgery was something reserved for the very wealthy and Hollywood stars, but in recent years, more and more “everyday” women and men have been seeking out cosmetic surgery procedures to correct minor and major flaws they find with their bodies. Also, cosmetic surgery is not always sought out for aesthetic reasons; often times, there are medical reasons that will prompt people to seek out a cosmetic surgeon.

Any surgery, whether elective or necessary, is a big deal, so a number of factors must be taken into consideration before undergoing any type of plastic surgery. If you are considering upper eyelid surgery (medically known as “blepharoplasty”), you have to first find out if you’re a good candidate for the surgery. If you meet the criteria for upper eyelid surgery, you want the best cosmetic surgeon in your area to perform the surgery, and in Denver and surrounding areas, Dr. Robert G. Fante at the Fante Eye & Face Centre is a top choice and one of the most highly respected surgeons in the highly specialized field of cosmetic surgery. Let’s take a look at what makes someone a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery.

If you have too much fullness, or loose skin, or a feeling of heaviness above your eyes, you are probably a good candidate. If your eyebrow or eyelid position is asymmetric, you are probably a good candidate as well. If you’ve had LASIK or other refractive surgery and no longer need glasses but can now see the aging around your eyes, you are probably a good candidate. If you have realistic expectations of the surgery and understand how the surgery will change your appearance, you may be a good candidate. If your reasons for having the surgery are not valid and realistic, or if the surgery will not improve the problems you’re experiencing, you may not be a good candidate. For instance, blepharoplasty will not correct dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet or the fine lines around the eyes that are a natural part of the aging process. However, if you have drooping eyelids or an excessive amount of skin around the eyes, upper eyelid surgery may be the ideal solution for these issues.

If you’re unable or unwilling to commit the time necessary to fully recover from the surgery, you will not make a good candidate for the surgery. If upper eyelid surgery will improve or correct vision problems you’re experiencing, you may be deemed a good candidate for blepharoplasty covered by health insurance.

The first step to finding out if you’re a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Fante at the Fante Eye & Face Centre. We will take a complete medical history and perform a thorough medical examination; after that is done, Dr. Fante will be able to tell you if blepharoplasty is right for you.

To learn more about upper eyelid surgery or to schedule your consultation, please contact the Fante Eye & Face Centre today. We will get you scheduled as soon as possible, and we’ll be happy to answer questions you have before coming into our medical office.
