While people associate wrinkles with aging, volume loss is really more telling. As we age, our body produces less and less collagen every year after our 20th birthday. Since collagen is the protein responsible for providing structural support to the skin, its decrease allows the cheeks to flatten and sink, the lips to thin and wrinkle, and the skin around the mouth to develop wrinkles and creases.
Beyond collagen loss, aging and gravity aren’t kind to our faces. Our tissues weaken and become more susceptible to gravity’s downward pull. Add environmental damage from the sun, weather, and personal habits and you have the perfect recipe for volume loss and facial aging.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Facial fillers are true to their name — when injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, or sunken area, they fill in the area, pushing the skin back upward. Facial fillers (also known as dermal fillers) are either “natural” or “synthetic.”
At Fante Eye & Face Centre, we offer the entire line of Juvéderm® facial fillers to fight this volume loss — Juvéderm® XC, Juvéderm Voluma® XC, and Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm Vollure® XC, and Juvéderm Volbella® XC. Each Juvederm dermal filler product addresses a different area of the face and replaces lost volume. We also offer the entire line of Restylane fillers.
What is Juvéderm®?
All Juvéderm® fillers are natural fillers. This is because they are made predominantly with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body whose job is to hydrate and plump the skin. When injected, the hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm® binds with water molecules in the area to firm the skin, add volume, and fill wrinkles.
Would I Be a Good Candidate for Juvederm® Fillers?
Just about anyone over the age of 35 could use some volume support here and there. This depends in part on how much sun damage you have. Generally, just about anyone could benefit from the Juvéderm® dermal fillers we offer.
The only exception would be people who want to address the dynamic wrinkles described above. Those wrinkles, formed by muscle contractions beneath the skin, are the realm of Botox®.
How Do Juvéderm® Fillers Work?
Juvederm injectable fillers are used to restore the facial volume lost due to aging. Juvederm products fill the pockets left by lost fat and collagen in the face. Patients see a reduction of folds, wrinkles, lines, and, as a result, achieve a full-faced, fresh, and youthful appearance.
What Can Juvéderm® Treat?
As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, some people form relatively deep parentheses lines that frame the corners of the mouth and creases that run from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds). You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
Juvéderm Voluma® XC
Experts call it “age-related mid-face volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time, as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.
Juvéderm® Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips with facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Other women have never been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips. At Fante Eye and Face Center, we are particularly sensitive to avoiding “big lips” that appear overdone; instead, subtle improvement is our goal.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
Like Ultra, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the lips and areas around the mouth. Ultra Plus is composed of bigger molecules than Ultra, making it thicker and a little longer lasting. Ultra Plus is better for severe wrinkles and folds and for extra lip volume enhancement.
Juvéderm Vollure® XC
Juvéderm Vollure® XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers. Vollure® is designed for the correction of moderate to deep creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, and parentheses lines framing the mouth.
Juvéderm Volbella® XC
Juvéderm Volbella® XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape to the lips. Plus, it erases the vertical lines that come from volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella® XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips. It provides a more subtle option when compared with Ultra or Ultra Plus. It is also very helpful for crows’ feet and fine lines around the eyes when Botox® isn’t enough.
Juvederm® vs. Botox Cosmetic
Botox is typically the first product that pops into heads when term “injectable therapy” is used. What most people do not know, however, is that injectable therapy goes far beyond muscle relaxants. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is used to treat wrinkles and folds. Juvederm is a gel injectable facial filler that restores natural volume that has been lost to years past. Botox, on the other hand, treats wrinkles through relaxing tight muscles in the area of treatment.
How Long Do Juvéderm® Fillers Last?
How long fillers will last depends in part on your metabolism, as different people break down hyaluronic acid at different rates. These are some general timeframes:
- Juvéderm Voluma® XC is the longest-lasting hyaluronic filler, restoring cheek volume for up to two years.
- Juvéderm® XC, Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Vollure XC, and Volbella XC last between 6-12 months for most people.
Can I Add Combine Juvederm® With Other Procedures?
Most people have facial filler injections performed during the same session as Botox® injections. Some procedures such as facelifts and eyelid surgery can benefit from the addition of Juvéderm fillers. They can soften and subtly fill out areas not fully addressed by the surgery.

Are There Any Potential Risks To Juvederm® Fillers?
Since Juvederm® is made with hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body, allergic reactions are almost unheard of, so pre-testing isn’t necessary. The most commonly observed side effects are:
- Lump formation
- Itching at the injection sites
These are typically mild in severity and usually resolve themselves in seven days with smile and marionette lines, and within 14 days on the lips. If you’re allergic to lidocaine you cannot use Juvederm®-XC, as it has some lidocaine in the product to keep the patient comfortable.
Occasionally, lumps or granulomas can form near the injection sites. This side effect can be reversed with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that speeds up the natural degradation of the hyaluronic acid in the filler.
Results Of Juvederm® Fillers
As with all facial fillers, the expertise of your injector is important to achieve the best results. The team at Fante Eye & Face Centre has received special training in the use of various fillers, including the entire Juvederm® family. Dr. Fante has personally injected thousands of happy people.
There is no downtime after an injection session with any Juvederm® product, other than the possible side effects described above.
