Fat can be a frustrating problem no matter where it sticks to the body. For many years, a solution for double-chin fat has been desired. People of all ages can develop a little extra fat under the chin. As the skin and superficial tissue ages and loses collagen, the appearance of a double-chin can worsen. Kybella is an injectable solution that had been long-awaited and, as expected, wonderfully received by patients everywhere. We are pleased to offer Kybella as a double-chin treatment in our Denver office. If you’ve been considering how you can get rid of your double-chin, here are a few things you need to know about the injectable approach.
Results Take Time
Some injectable treatments provide immediate results. Kybella doesn’t happen to be one of them. When Kybella, the brand name for deoxycholic acid, is injected into a localized area of fatty tissue, it dismantles fat cells. By weakening the cellular membrane of fatty tissue, deoxycholic acid allows the body to eliminate fat content in the treated area. This doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, the appearance of the chin may look a little worse for wear at first. Over the course of several weeks, though, fat elimination leads to a noticeably better profile.
Skin Elasticity Matters
The purpose of Kybella treatment is to reduce fat. Deoxycholic acid is an organic substance that the body makes to help break down dietary fat. Fat metabolism is the sole purpose of this acid. When treating a double-chin with Kybella, it is important that the provider assesses skin elasticity, how much stretch and retraction the skin has, in order to predict the outcome of treatment. To be fair, neither CoolSculpting nor liposuction of the neck tightens loose skin either. When elasticity is poor, we may suggest a combination of fat-reducing and skin-tightening for best results.
Expect Downtime
Most injectable treatments result in temporary, mild redness and swelling. Some people develop absolutely no side effects from dermal fillers or Botox. Kybella is different. Because of the amount of deoxycholic acid that is injected, patients should expect tenderness and swelling to last a day or two. For this reason, some patients prefer to schedule Kybella treatment before a weekend when they can stay in and relax.
