Options for Lip Augmentation

There is something fulfilling about feeling confident in one’s appearance. For women, especially, facial contouring involves the lips. We can see the importance of full, symmetrical lips in the popularity of various lip augmentation treatments and lip kits that have been developed to give the illusion of natural fullness. In our Denver plastic surgery and medical spa, our patients have options for lip augmentation. We’ll discuss them here.

Temporary Lip Augmentation

By and far, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers represent the large majority of lip treatments performed today. These temporary fillers enhance the shape of the mouth using smooth gel that attracts water molecules. Hyaluronic acid binds to these molecules to create soft, natural-looking shape. The results of lip injections may last 6 to 18 months and, when the filler is made of hyaluronic acid, the results of treatment are also reversible.

Long-Lasting Lip Augmentation

After some time using temporary fillers, many patients want to see more long-term improvements. While fillers are advantageous for their own reasons, they may not last as long as some would like. In these cases, two options are available, fat transfer and lip implants.

Fat transfer, or fat injections, are an excellent path toward naturally-augmented lips. To achieve outstanding results, the doctor first harvests fat from an area such as the thighs, buttocks, or abdomen. The fat obtained through minimally-invasive liposuction is processed in a centrifuge to separate pure fat cells from other fluids. The purified fat is then injected into the body of the upper and lower lip as needed to create perfect volume and symmetry.

Lip Implants

Patients interested in permanent lip augmentation may lean toward lip implants. This treatment has increased in popularity now that we are accustomed to the use of lip injections and crave longer lasting improvements without continual maintenance. Lip implants are solid models made of solid silicone (that can’t leak) or porous polyethylene plastic. Both materials are ultra-soft and preserve the natural feel and movement of the mouth.
