What Are Dermal Fillers?

What is Juvéderm®?
All Juvéderm® fillers are natural fillers. This is because they are made predominantly with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps hydrate and plump the skin. When injected, the hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm® binds with water molecules in the area to firm the skin, add volume, and fill wrinkles.
How Do Juvéderm® Fillers Work?
Juvéderm® injectable fillers are used to restore the facial volume lost due to aging. Juvéderm® products fill the pockets left by the loss of fat and collagen in the face. Patients see a reduction in folds, wrinkles, and lines, resulting in a full-faced, fresh, and youthful appearance.
What Can Juvéderm® Treat?
Juvéderm® XC
As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, some people form relatively deep parentheses lines that frame the corners of the mouth and creases that run from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds). You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
Juvéderm Voluma® XC
Experts call it “age-related mid-face volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time, as you lose the collagen that supports your skin and your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.
It can also be used to aesthetically augment the chin.
Juvéderm® Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips when it comes to facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin does. Other women have never been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC provides or restores fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips. At Fante Eye & Face Center, we are particularly sensitive to avoiding “big lips” that appear overdone; instead, our goal is subtle improvement.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
Like Ultra, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the lips and areas around the mouth. Ultra Plus is composed of larger molecules than Ultra, making it thicker and slightly longer-lasting. Ultra Plus is better for severe wrinkles and folds, as well as for extra lip volume enhancement.
Juvéderm Vollure® XC
Juvéderm Vollure® XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers. Vollure® is designed to correct moderate to deep creases and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds running from the nose to the corners of the mouth and parentheses lines framing the mouth.
Juvéderm Volbella® XC
Juvéderm Volbella® XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape to the lips. Plus, it erases the vertical lines caused by volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella® XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips. It provides a subtler option compared with Ultra or Ultra Plus. It is also very helpful for crow’s feet and fine lines around the eyes when Botox® isn’t enough.

Botox is typically the first product that comes to mind when the term “injectable therapy” is used. What most people do not know, however, is that injectable therapy goes far beyond muscle relaxants. Juvéderm® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is used to treat wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm® is a gel-based injectable facial filler that restores natural volume lost over the years. Botox, on the other hand, treats wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles in the treatment area.
Can I Combine Juvéderm® With Other Procedures?
Most people have facial filler injections performed during the same session as Botox® injections. Some procedures, such as facelifts and eyelid surgery, can benefit from the addition of Juvéderm® fillers. They can soften and subtly fill out areas not fully addressed by the surgery.
How Long Do Juvéderm® Fillers Last?
How long fillers will last depends in part on your metabolism, as different people break down hyaluronic acid at different rates. These are some general timeframes:

Are There Any Potential Risks to Juvéderm® Fillers?
Since Juvéderm® is made with hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body, allergic reactions are very uncommon, so pre-testing isn’t necessary. The most commonly observed side effects are:

Itching at the injection sites
These are typically mild in severity and usually resolve on their own within 7 days for smile and marionette lines, and within 14 days for the lips. If you’re allergic to lidocaine you cannot use Juvéderm®-XC, as it has some lidocaine in the product to keep the patient comfortable.
Occasionally, lumps or granulomas can form near the injection sites. This side effect can be reversed with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that accelerates the natural degradation of hyaluronic acid in the filler.
Results of Juvéderm® Fillers

There is no downtime after an injection with any Juvéderm® product, aside from the possible side effects described above.

Ideal candidates are generally in good health, have realistic expectations, and want improvement in areas where hyaluronic acid fillers can provide natural-looking support.
Juvéderm® is not the best treatment for every type of wrinkle. Dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement, such as frown lines or forehead lines, are often better treated with Botox® or another neuromodulator. During your consultation, our team can help determine whether Juvéderm®, Botox®, another filler, or a different treatment is most appropriate.
Alternatives to Juvéderm® Fillers
Juvéderm® is one option for restoring volume, softening wrinkles, and improving facial contours, but it is not the only injectable treatment available. Depending on your concerns, our team may recommend alternatives such as Restylane® fillers, Sculptra®, Botox®, fat transfer, laser resurfacing, skin care, or a surgical procedure.
