General Plastic Surgeons vs. Facial Surgeons

In Denver, Colorado
The Art of Compassion    The Science of Beauty

Dr. Fante of the Eye and Face Center in Denver, Colorado, is a facial cosmetic surgeon. General plastic surgeons are trained to treat any area on the entire body. Facial plastic surgeons are specifically trained to treat only the areas of the neck and face. Cosmetic surgeons are plastic surgeons who specialize in surgery done for cosmetic reasons rather than reconstructive reasons. Dr. Fante can do both.

General physician education
Practicing physicians are all required to complete a BS or BA undergraduate degree, four years of medical school, and one year of residency training. They then choose to continue on the general medical path or move on along the surgical path. Doctors choosing the surgical path go on to receive highly specialized training in major surgery.

Education of plastic surgeons
Physicians wishing to receive specialized training in the field of plastic surgery can choose either general or facial plastic surgery. The early training for both fields is the same: undergrad school, medical school and a one-year internship in general surgery, where the new physician will learn common surgical procedures such as gallbladder removal, appendectomies, and hernia repair. The point of this internship is to give the new physician the surgical basics; however, physicians choosing either general or facial plastic surgery will not perform these types of surgeries once they enter their field of specialty.

Further education of facial surgeons
The general plastic surgeon will ultimately participate in three to five years of a general surgery internship and two years of plastic surgery, whereas the facial plastic surgeon will take part in one to two years of a general surgery internship and four additional years of specialty training in head and neck surgery and facial plastic surgery.

The final four years of facial plastic surgery training focuses on anatomy, physiology, and pathology and structures of the face, head, and neck. So while general plastic surgeons are better prepared for procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation or reduction, and tummy tucks, a facial plastic surgeon is best prepared to perform plastic surgery on the head and neck.
