Eyelid Surgery Facts

Aging is a process we all must go through. Unfortunately, our eyes are usually the first part of our bodies that show our age. Because the skin on the eyelids is so thin, it usually wrinkles and sags first. If you have eyes that are excessively wrinkly or have eyelids that droop or have large bags, eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) may be the perfect solution for you. If you are considering eyelid surgery in Denver, there are some things you should know. If, after reading this, you’re still interested in having this cosmetic surgery performed, please contact the Fante Eye & Face Centre to schedule a consultation.

The ideal eye surgery candidate is usually over the age of 35 and in good health. There are reasons, however, that someone younger may be a candidate for blepharoplasty. So, if you’re unsure whether or not you should get eyelid surgery, consult your doctor.

Blepharoplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure. It usually lasts about one hour (if no other procedures are being done). When you wake up, you will have some swelling, bruising, and very minimal pain, but you can go home the same day. You will have stitches in your eyelids, but they will be removed within the first week. After two weeks, you should be able to return to work, but you may still have slight bruising or swelling.

There are certain things you can do at home to help you heal faster, such as ice your eyes, avoiding any activity that will cause your eyes to dry out, such as reading, watching TV or using the computer. Also try to keep your head elevated as much as possible. It is okay to sleep completely flat, but this will cause you to have significant swelling in the morning. Don’t worry because this is completely normal and caused by being flat while you sleep. The swelling you see in the morning will dissipate significantly throughout the day.

Eyelid surgery will give you a more youthful look and, if your droopy eyelids were affecting your vision, improve your vision also. Blepharoplasty done on your bottom lids will likely last forever and not need to be redone. Eyelid surgery on your top eyelid, however, will likely need to be redone after 7 to 10 years. This is simply because your eyes will continue to age, however, blepharoplasty is one of the longest lasting procedures you can have done to your eyes.

If you want to know more about blepharoplasty or if you think you’re a good candidate for eyelid surgery in Denver, please contact the Fante Eye & Face Centre today to schedule an initial consultation with cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Robert G. Fante.
