How to Choose a Facial Surgeon

The Art of Compassion
The Science of Beauty
Considering cosmetic or reconstructive surgery? Wondering how to find the best surgeon for what you want to have done? If you live in Denver, Colorado, you can contact Dr. Fante for an interview to meet his staff, ask questions, and look at our facilities. If you're in another location, read on, because the principles behind choosing a facial surgeon are the same everywhere.
Whether you're concerned about a facial abnormality or simply want to soften the signs of aging, be sure to choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), 50% of the facial plastic surgeries performed in 2005 were to correct complications from surgeries performed by non-board-certified surgeons. AAFPRS members have been trained to work specifically on the face, head and neck, and the AAFPRS imposes a strict code of ethics on its members. Only an AAFPRS-certified facial plastic surgeon has the specialized training and hands-on experience to give you the results you're dreaming about.
Make a short list
You can gather some names by asking friends and family, doing an online search, or by calling your local chapter of the AAFPRS (their website will also give you a list of names). Depending on where you live, there may be quite a lot of candidates.
However you determine which doctors to consider, look at the websites of those doctors and check the credentials and professional memberships. Cull your list down to members of the AAFPRS, and any of the following:
- The American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS)
- The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Then call them to schedule initial consultations.
What kinds of questions should you ask?
Write down your questions and take the list with you to each consultation. Don't be shy about asking follow-up questions if you don't understand the initial answers. If you know which procedure(s) you want, ask how many times the doctor has performed that particular procedure. (Keep in mind though, that your chosen surgeon may have other recommendations.)
Ask:
- Does he regularly perform your specific procedures?
- Does he have privileges at the hospital where you wish to have your surgery performed?
- Does he have a Before and After book you can browse through?
- Can he give you names of previous patients who have had your procedure?
- How long will recovery time be?
- What sort of follow-up appointments would you have, and are they included in the cost?
- What financial plans do they offer?
With only one face for life, you need to protect it, not only by choosing the best facial surgeon, but by educating yourself about the procedures you would like to undergo. Remember that not everyone is a good candidate for every surgery. Be aware that the best surgeons are also well-educated and attend many continuing education courses, so they know about the most recent and most effective procedures available.
Listen well as you interview each facial surgeon and, as you talk, also be aware of the environment.
- Does the staff seem efficient and organized?
- Do they seem to enjoy their jobs?
- Do they seem to be in good communications with each other?
- Does the doctor seem on top of his schedule?
- Do you feel comfortable in those surroundings?
Expect the facial surgeon to ask you some questions too. Every good surgeon will ask why you want to have the procedures you're asking for. He or she will assess you as a candidate for those procedures, and consider whether something else might better achieve your goals.
