When we hear mention of a person having “a weak chin”, perhaps we wonder about our own. Although it doesn’t necessarily imply weakness, a receding chin doesn’t give the face as much definition as a strong one.

Facial experts have ways of measuring the human face to compare the size of its features with each other. There are ideal measurements, but most of us can look very attractive without necessarily conforming to them. Character is just as important in a face as aesthetic measurements.

A small chin can be hereditary and also, as we age, a certain amount of the chin bone can disintegrate slowly and be absorbed by the body, making the chin look smaller than it did when we were young.

If you do feel that your chin is too small, there are ways to enlarge it which are pretty simple. Chin implants have been done since the 1950s and much research has given us improved methods and more choices.

Bone grafts

Bone can be taken from elsewhere on your body and grafted to the chin. The body grows blood vessels within days to feed the implanted bone, and the new chin becomes part of your face. There’s no chance of this bone being rejected, since it comes from your own body.

Silicone implants

These can be done for the chin much as they’re done for cheek implants. The silicone can be chosen at the right hardness or softness for the rest of your face, and Dr. Fante will use a size to best enhance your entire face.

  • The silicone is inserted easily into a pocket created over the jawbone
  • Dr. Fante will make the incision inside the mouth so no scar will ever be visible
  • Depending on the exact shape of your chin, the implant can be positioned higher or lower to best improve your whole face
  • Afterwards, the chin will be taped to reduce swelling
  • Stitches will dissolve in about a week or 10 days
  • You’ll have an antibiotic to guard against infection

For a few days you may have bruising, and Dr. Fante will give you instructions on how best to clean your teeth. You may not feel much like smiling at first, but after a week or two you’ll smile with pleasure at your new profile and facial proportions.
