Our good friend, the force of gravity, which keeps us down to earth, seems to overdo things after a while, when we find our cheeks slipping. By the time we reach about 40 years of age, the youthful shape of our cheeks has changed, with the fat pads disappearing or apparently taking up a new residence beneath the chin.

Not to worry though. Facial surgeon Dr. Fante, in his Denver, Colorado cosmetic surgery practice, can perform a cheek implant (also called malar augmentation).

Some of us might like cheek implants even before we reach middle age, if we feel our cheeks need more definition or substance. A good cheek structure gives a youthful look. Silicone implants

Silicone facial implants have been used for 50 years, and have proved to be durable and reliable. They come in varying degrees of hardness or softness. They’re a good way to plump up your cheeks. In time, our bodies encapsulate them within scar tissue, which makes them easy to remove later on for any reason.

Hydroxyapatite implants

Amazingly, these are made from coral which has been chemically altered without destroying the porous structure. Proteins are removed from the coral and it ends up being like a piece of neutral latticework, on which your own natural bone can grow.

The implant procedure

The procedure is fairly short and simple, taking less than an hour.

  • Small incisions can be made either at the lower eyelid or inside the upper lip
  • A pocket is created and the implant gently inserted to its proper position
  • A dressing will be applied and Dr. Fante will give you directions on self-care during recovery. These will vary if you had any other procedures done along with the cheek implants.

Recovery

  • There’ll be some swelling at first which will interfere somewhat with your mouth and lip movements
  • The stitches will dissolve in about 10 days
  • Dr. Fante will prescribe an antibiotic for you
  • Bruising should fade within the week

After a week or 10 days you’ll be thrilled with your new look, with less of those lines that develop between the nose and corners of the mouth and your cheeks being youthfully high on your face.
