Would I be a good candidate for Botox®?
- If you have any local infection at the site you’d want to get that cleared up first
- Also, if you have any neuromuscular disorder, you might not be eligible, especially myasthenia gravis or Eaton-Lambert syndrome
- If you’re pregnant or nursing, best to wait till that’s finished
Otherwise, if you’re over 18 and want to do something about those frown lines, you’ll be a good candidate.
What is Botox® exactly?
It’s a purified form of the Botulinum toxin Type A, which is a protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Although it’s derived from a toxin which causes botulism if we eat it in contaminated foods, when it’s injected in this purified form, it’s not poisonous at all.
The amount of the toxin required to cause harm is about 100 times more than a complete treatment of Botox® shots.
When given in this tiny amount, the toxin simply relaxes the targeted muscles, rather than paralyzing them.
How does Botox® work?
It blocks the release of a neurotransmitter that would otherwise tell a muscle to contract. Without that nerve impulse coming to it, the muscle can’t contract, so it doesn’t form wrinkles.
Does it hurt to get these injections?
Barely. It’s a minimal and brief discomfort. Dr. Fante will use a local anesthetic cream if you’re concerned about pain.
Does Botox® work for crows’ feet?
Yes, it works for crows’ feet, frown lines, upper lip lines, “bunny” lines on the nose, and forehead lines. It’s also been used to treat excessive sweating disorders, muscle contraction and migraine headaches.
How long does the effect last?
Anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Gradually the frown lines will re-appear. At that time you can have repeated Botox® injections, or not, as you choose. Your appearance will not be any different than it originally was, if you choose to discontinue the injections.
Can I have Botox® shots as well as other cosmetic procedures?
Yes. Botox® works well in conjunction with laser skin resurfacing, for example. Dr. Fante can discuss all your options during your initial consultation and work out with you the best grouping of procedures and the best order.
